Often, yes. CRA generally treats employment gifts and awards as taxable, with an administrative policy that can exclude certain qualifying non-cash gifts and awards. A gift card needs a closer look; it is not automatically tax-free because it was given at a holiday party.
Distinguish a gift from a performance reward
CRA separates gifts for special occasions, awards recognizing broader contributions, and performance-related rewards. Cash and near-cash benefits generally do not qualify for the non-cash policy. Some restricted gift cards can be treated as non-cash only when all the administrative conditions are met.
The employer must also consider the annual limit and documentation requirements. A card that can be converted into cash or used like a general payment card may have a different result from a restricted retailer card.
Ask payroll what was reported
For example, an employee receives a card for meeting a sales target. Calling it a “gift” in the email does not change its performance-related purpose. The reason for the award is part of the tax analysis.
Keep useful details
- The occasion and reason the card was provided.
- Its value, issuer, and redemption restrictions.
- Any other employer gifts or awards received that year.
- Payroll's explanation of the taxable amount.
For business owners, document the policy before distributing cards rather than reconstructing it at year-end. For employees, compare taxable-benefit information with the T4 and raise discrepancies with payroll. Do not remove a reported benefit from your return simply because the card was not cash deposited into your bank account.
