Accounting and bookkeeping costs connected with your business can generally qualify as business expenses. The purpose of the work determines the treatment, so keep a detailed invoice rather than assuming every professional fee belongs on the same line.

Distinguish operating work from capital transactions

CRA permits fees for maintaining records and preparing income-tax and GST/HST returns for a business. Legal or other costs incurred to acquire capital property may instead form part of the asset's cost. Certain objection or appeal expenses follow separate reporting instructions.

If an invoice covers multiple services, request a breakdown. A personal matter, business bookkeeping, corporate work, and an asset purchase should not be combined into one unexplained deduction in your sole proprietorship.

Allocate a combined invoice sensibly

Suppose an adviser handles monthly bookkeeping and helps acquire a business asset. Record the two services separately. The fact that the same adviser performed both does not establish identical tax treatment.

Keep the professional-fee record complete

  • Invoice describing the work and the period covered.
  • The business or individual receiving the service.
  • Reimbursements, insurance recoveries, or other assistance.
  • Asset-purchase documents where the fee relates to an acquisition.

Ask your preparer to identify the return line or asset schedule used and how any GST/HST is handled. Do not claim the same fee in both the business statement and a separate personal deduction. For recurring work, consistent bookkeeping categories make year-end review faster and help identify unusual one-time costs that need individual attention.
