The direct answer
It can be. A crypto-to-crypto exchange is a disposition even if no Canadian dollars enter your bank account. The result may be business income or a capital gain or loss, depending on the activity. By contrast, moving assets between wallets that you own generally does not itself dispose of them. Transaction records are needed to distinguish transfers from trades.
Track what changed ownership
A crypto transaction history can contain purchases, swaps, sales, fees and transfers between your own wallets. Identify each event rather than treating every movement as a sale or every swap as tax-free. Keep wallet ownership and exchange records clear. The preparer needs enough information to distinguish an actual disposition from moving the same holding between accounts you control.
Preserve records before accounts become inaccessible
Export transaction histories and keep the supporting valuation information. A year-end balance alone cannot reconstruct the path of assets across exchanges. If the software import has gaps or duplicates, identify them rather than accepting a gain calculation blindly. Explain the nature and scale of the activity so the business-versus-capital treatment can also be reviewed.
What to gather before the review
- Exchange exports and wallet addresses you control
- Transaction dates, values and fee information
- Transfer matching and notes on missing data
Is a trade between two cryptocurrencies irrelevant because no dollars were received?
No. A swap can have tax consequences even without a cash withdrawal. The transaction must be classified and valued using the applicable rules and complete records.
Your next step
Export exchange histories and identify transfers between your own wallets before preparing a gain calculation.
