Some tax paid by a private corporation can enter refundable-dividend-tax accounts. Paying taxable dividends may release part of that tax as a corporate dividend refund. The refund depends on the account balances and the type of dividend paid.

Match dividends to the correct account

CRA distinguishes eligible refundable dividend tax on hand from non-eligible refundable dividend tax on hand. Eligible and non-eligible dividends interact with those accounts differently, and ordering rules apply. A capital dividend does not serve the same purpose as a taxable dividend.

The shareholder's personal tax must be considered alongside the corporate refund. A refund to the company is not automatically a net saving for the owner. CRA also requires a timely T2 within the applicable three-year period to obtain a dividend refund.

Model both sides before year-end

For example, a company with investment income may have a refundable balance, but paying a dividend moves taxable income to the shareholder. Compare the combined result and cash needs rather than maximizing the corporate refund in isolation.

Prepare the tax-pool review

  • ERDTOH and NERDTOH continuity schedules.
  • Taxable dividends received and paid.
  • GRIP and other relevant corporate balances.
  • The shareholder's expected personal income.

Ask the preparer to explain which dividend releases which refundable balance and what remains afterward. Document the dividend and file the information slips consistently. Keep the pool schedules year to year; the bank account and retained earnings do not provide a substitute for these tax balances.
