The direct answer

Not automatically. An asset with an enduring benefit can be a capital purchase rather than an ordinary operating expense. Its tax deduction depends on the asset class, acquisition and available-for-use dates, business use and applicable incentives. A credit-card charge does not establish that the whole amount is deductible in the purchase year.

Describe what was bought and when

A computer purchase can include hardware, accessories, software and support services. Keep the itemized invoice and explain when the equipment became available for business use. Record personal use separately. The preparer needs these details to determine the proper treatment, rather than assuming the entire payment is an ordinary expense because it appeared on the business card.

Maintain an asset history

Keep older equipment on the asset list until its disposal or other treatment is reviewed. If a laptop was traded in, sold or moved between personal and business use, provide the dates and amounts. Do not delete the original record just because the device is no longer used. An accurate history helps reconcile the current purchase with previous claims.

What to gather before the review

  • Itemized purchase invoice and date available for use
  • Business-use estimate and purpose
  • Records of trade-ins, sales and earlier asset claims

Does paying in full make the laptop immediately deductible?

No. The payment method does not decide whether the cost is capital or current. Classification and the applicable deduction rules need to be checked for the item and year.

Your next step

Keep the invoice, date first used, financing details and any trade-in or sale information for the old equipment.
