Tax residence is a facts-based question
Immigration status and tax residence are not the same test. The date you became or ceased to be resident for Canadian tax purposes can affect the reporting required. Tell us about homes, family ties, time in each country and other relevant circumstances rather than assuming that a travel date alone decides the result.
Arriving in Canada
Provide income records for the year, identifying amounts before and after the relevant residence date. Foreign income and asset records may be needed as part of the review. We discuss the information required for the Canadian return and any applicable credits or other reporting, without assuming eligibility from immigration status alone.
Leaving Canada
Departure can involve income reporting, property information and deemed dispositions of certain assets. Applicable forms may include T1243, T1161 or T1244, depending on the facts. Not all assets are subject to the same rules. Acquisition costs and values at the relevant date help assess the work required.
Income or property retained in Canada
Canadian rental property, pensions or other income after departure may create ongoing non-resident obligations. Those matters should be considered alongside the departure-year return. We confirm the Canadian filings included in the engagement; foreign-country tax returns are outside the services described here.
General information only. Requirements depend on the facts and the tax year. Service scope is confirmed before engagement.
Before you get started
Does my immigration status determine my tax residence?
Not by itself. Canadian tax residence depends on the facts and applicable rules, including residential ties and potentially a tax treaty.
Does everyone leaving Canada owe departure tax?
No single answer applies to every move. Residence status, the property held and available exceptions or elections need to be reviewed.
Let's discuss your tax needs.
