An in-kind contribution from a non-registered account to a TFSA is treated as a disposition at fair market value. If the shares have appreciated, a capital gain can arise even though you did not sell them for cash.

Check both the gain and contribution room

CRA says the contribution amount is the property's fair market value when contributed. That amount uses TFSA room. If the property has fallen in value, a capital loss on the direct contribution is not deductible.

Do not use the original purchase cost as the contribution amount, and do not assume a transfer between accounts is tax-neutral. The tax treatment of a direct TFSA-to-TFSA transfer is a different matter from moving investments into the registered system.

Calculate before instructing the broker

For example, shares costing $6,000 are worth $9,000 at transfer. The relevant TFSA contribution is $9,000, and the non-registered investment has a $3,000 gain before considering selling costs or other adjustments. This illustration does not establish the tax payable, which depends on the full return.

Prepare the transfer record

  • Current adjusted cost base and quantity of shares.
  • Market value and exact transfer date.
  • Available TFSA room reconciled across all accounts.
  • Broker confirmation and foreign-currency details if relevant.

Ask about the tax cost before transferring a large position. If an investment is at a loss, review the rules before trying an alternative sale-and-repurchase arrangement, since loss restrictions may still apply. Keep the transfer in the investment-disposition records for the year, not just in the TFSA folder.
