Reinvested distributions in a non-registered account can be taxable even when no cash reaches your bank account. The distribution and the reinvestment are separate events. Accurate adjusted-cost-base records help prevent the same economic amount being taxed again when units are sold.
Read the distribution breakdown
CRA explains that mutual-fund distributions may include interest, dividends, capital gains, foreign income, or return of capital. Reinvested income still needs reporting. Return of capital generally reduces adjusted cost base, while reinvested taxable distributions may require an increase to the investment cost.
Do not assume every distribution has the same effect. Some ETFs have year-end non-cash distributions that require careful reconciliation with the issuer's tax information and broker records.

Keep a unit and cost ledger
For example, an investor receives no cash but the fund reports a taxable distribution that is reinvested. The tax slip answers the income-reporting question; the cost ledger addresses the future sale calculation. Both need attention.
Gather the annual investment package
- T3 or T5 slips and fund tax-factor information.
- Distribution and reinvestment statements.
- Purchases, sales, and transfers during the year.
- The prior adjusted-cost-base schedule for each holding.
Ask your preparer or investment recordkeeper to reconcile non-cash distributions before the next sale. Avoid using only the brokerage account's displayed gain, especially after transfers between institutions. Keep the history for as long as the investment remains relevant to a future tax calculation, rather than discarding it after the current return is assessed.
