Rent or property tax for an eligible Ontario principal residence can be relevant to the Ontario energy and property tax credit, a component of the Ontario Trillium Benefit. It is not a general deduction of your household rent from employment income.

Use the correct application and year

The Ontario Trillium Benefit combines several credits. Form ON-BEN is used to apply for the energy and property tax component and certain related Ontario benefits. Eligibility and payments depend on factors such as income, age, family circumstances, and qualifying housing costs.

Distinguish the tax year supplying the information from the later benefit-payment period. Also identify any rent already claimed as a business expense; CRA's guidance requires adjusting the eligible rent figure for that portion.

Keep housing costs traceable

For example, someone who moves during the year should record the rent paid at each address and the dates they lived there. Adding twelve months of the newest rent amount can overstate or understate the actual figure.

Gather housing records

  • Landlord receipts or a payment ledger with the rental address.
  • Property-tax statements if you owned your principal residence.
  • Move-in and move-out dates for each Ontario residence.
  • Details of shared housing costs and any business-use allocation.

Tell your preparer about subsidized housing, residence accommodation, long-term care, or unusual ownership arrangements rather than assuming the ordinary rent treatment applies. Review the benefit notice after assessment and keep it separate from your income-tax refund calculation. A return showing no income tax payable can still contain information needed to determine this benefit.
