GST/HST and records: 10 practical business questions · Browse the 100-article collection

The direct answer

Yes. A registered business must file for every reporting period, including periods with no activity or no net tax to remit. A nil return is still a return. If the business has closed, the account must be dealt with properly and a final return may be required; simply stopping sales does not close the account.

Check the account's reporting periods

A business can have no sales while its GST/HST account remains active. Review the assigned reporting periods and CRA account messages rather than waiting for activity to resume. Confirm whether purchases, adjustments or other entries occurred during the period. “No sales” and “nothing to report” should not be treated as interchangeable without reviewing the records.

Close accounts deliberately when appropriate

Stopping work does not automatically close a tax account. If the business has ended, identify the final transactions and ask what account-closing steps and adjustments are needed. Do not simply stop filing because the bank account is quiet. Keep confirmations and copies of submitted returns so the business can distinguish an outstanding filing from a completed one.

What to gather before the review

  • GST/HST account and reporting-period details
  • Sales, purchases and adjustments for the period
  • Prior returns and any business-closure information

Can an inactive business ignore a filing request?

No. Confirm the obligation for the active account and period. If the request seems wrong, resolve the account status rather than assuming no tax owing removes the need to respond.

Your next step

Check the reporting periods in your CRA business account and list every outstanding return.
