No single answer works for every business. Leasing and buying produce different deductions, but the useful comparison includes business use, vehicle classification, limits, financing costs, expected ownership period, and total after-tax cost.
Compare the correct deductions
CRA allows qualifying vehicle operating expenses for earning business income. Purchased vehicles generally involve capital cost allowance rather than deducting the purchase price immediately. Passenger vehicles can be subject to limits on depreciation, interest, and lease costs.
Business use must also be established. A vehicle used partly for family purposes does not become fully deductible because the lease or financing is paid from a business account.
Model the full period
For example, a lower monthly lease payment may be attractive, but mileage restrictions, end-of-lease charges, and the absence of resale proceeds affect the economic result. Those contract terms belong beside the tax estimate, not outside it.
Gather comparable proposals
- Purchase price, financing terms, and expected resale value.
- Lease payments, deposits, residual terms, and kilometre limits.
- Expected business and total kilometres.
- Vehicle specifications and the intended business use.
Ask for both options to be modelled using the same assumptions and the applicable acquisition-year tax limits. Identify any special zero-emission rules separately rather than assuming every hybrid or electric purchase has identical treatment. Choose based on the business's needs and total cost; a larger deduction alone does not establish that the vehicle is the better purchase.
