Some tax paid before registration may be recoverable, particularly for eligible property still held when you become a registrant. It is not a blanket refund of every old business expense. The registration effective date and the nature of each purchase matter.
Start with property on hand
CRA's new-registrant rules can provide input tax credits for certain inventory and capital property held for commercial activities at registration. The calculation may involve the property's basic tax content and applicable restrictions, rather than simply copying the tax from the original invoice.
Services already consumed and ongoing prepaid services require separate consideration. Identify what remained available for commercial use when registration began.
Build a registration-date inventory
For example, a new registrant may still own merchandise bought earlier but have already used up several months of advertising services. Those items should not be treated as identical pre-registration purchases. Record the remaining property and the periods covered by services.
Gather supporting documents
- Registration confirmation and effective date.
- Inventory and asset lists at that date.
- Original invoices showing tax and supplier information.
- Business-use percentages and prepaid-service terms.
Ask your preparer to review each category and show the basis for any opening ITC. Do not move the registration date simply to obtain a preferred result without reviewing the legal obligation and application history. Keep the opening calculation with your first return; it may be needed later when property is sold, changes use, or remains on hand when registration ends.
