It can. Ceasing to be a GST/HST registrant can trigger special calculations for property still held and certain prepaid services. Filing a final return with zero sales does not necessarily resolve the cancellation tax.
Review property before closing the account
CRA's rules for ceasing registration distinguish types of property and the relevant tax calculations. Inventory, equipment, real property, and personal-use changes may require different treatment. The final result depends on facts such as prior input tax credits and commercial use.
Do not assume that keeping an asset instead of selling it avoids GST/HST consequences. Cancellation itself can be a relevant tax event.

Make the final return traceable
For example, a consultant closes the business but keeps a computer and other equipment previously used commercially. List the assets, original tax treatment, and current circumstances before the final GST/HST calculation is prepared. Avoid relying solely on the bank balance or last month's sales.
Prepare a cancellation checklist
- Proposed cancellation date and reason.
- Inventory and asset list at that date.
- Original invoices and ITCs previously claimed.
- Prepaid contracts, outstanding invoices, refunds, and credit notes.
Ask whether cancellation is permitted in your circumstances and which final reporting period applies. The income-tax consequences of selling or retaining assets must be reviewed separately. Keep the cancellation confirmation and final assessment with your business records, and do not assume the account is closed simply because you stopped charging tax or stopped using the business name.
