A Canadian resident generally reports gross foreign pension income in Canadian dollars. Foreign withholding does not automatically remove the Canadian reporting obligation. Treaty exemptions and foreign-tax credits are considered separately.
Identify the pension correctly
CRA instructs taxpayers to report gross foreign pension amounts rather than net bank deposits. Depending on the pension and treaty, a deduction may be available for an amount exempt in Canada, or a foreign-tax-credit calculation may apply.
Not every overseas retirement payment has the same classification. Periodic pensions, lump sums, private retirement accounts, and government benefits may need different treatment. Keep the plan's legal name and the nature of the payment.
Reconcile the foreign statement
For example, a pension statement may show the gross entitlement, foreign income tax, health deductions, and a net payment. The Canadian calculation needs those components and the appropriate currency conversion, not just the deposit shown by your bank.
Prepare a pension file
- Annual pension statements and payment dates.
- Gross income and foreign tax separately identified.
- Plan type, payer, and country.
- Foreign assessments or refund information where relevant.
Ask your preparer to document the Canadian reporting line and any treaty provision or credit used. If the other country later refunds tax, inform the preparer because the Canadian foreign-tax-credit position may need review. Coordinate any required foreign filing with an adviser qualified in that jurisdiction while keeping the Canadian reporting complete.
