The direct answer

The estate or trust needs its own trust account number for electronic T3 filing. The deceased person’s SIN serves a different purpose and does not replace that account. CRA offers trust-account registration online or through Form T3APP, with supporting documentation. If a number already exists, use it rather than creating another account for the same trust.

Check whether an account already exists

Search the estate or trust records for earlier T3 assessments, registration correspondence and account details. If another adviser previously filed, obtain the relevant documents before applying again. A duplicate account can create confusion, while using an individual's SIN in place of the trust number does not establish the estate's separate filing identity.

Align the registration with the legal trust

Use the correct name, trustee information and supporting documents. Keep any registration confirmation with the permanent file so future returns use the same account consistently. If the trustee changes or contact information is outdated, identify the update needed. Registration is part of preparing the filing; it is not evidence that a return has already been submitted.

What to gather before the review

  • Earlier T3 notices or registration correspondence
  • Trust or estate supporting documents
  • Current trustee and authorized-contact information

Can the estate just use the person's SIN for electronic T3 filing?

No. The estate or trust needs the appropriate trust account number. The individual's SIN has a different role and does not replace the trust's filing account.

Your next step

Locate previous T3 assessments or obtain the account number before the filing process begins.
