Serious illness may support a taxpayer-relief request when it explains why tax obligations could not be met. Relief is discretionary. The strongest starting point is a clear timeline connecting the event to the missed filing or payment, supported by appropriate records.
Separate the tax from the extra charges
The relief provisions can allow CRA to cancel or waive qualifying penalties and interest. They do not simply erase the underlying tax. Time limits also apply, and the ten-year framework operates differently for penalties and interest.
A request should identify the charges, years, circumstances, and relief sought. Explain what prevented compliance, how long that continued, and what steps were taken once the situation improved. A diagnosis alone may not explain every period of delay.

Show the sequence rather than a vague hardship claim
For example, an unexpected hospital admission may explain an inability to complete a return during a specific period. A useful submission connects admission, recovery, access to records, and subsequent filing. It should distinguish that period from unrelated delays before or after the illness.
Organize supporting information
- Notices showing the penalties and interest involved.
- A dated account of the illness or other extraordinary event.
- Relevant medical or other independent confirmation.
- Filing and payment records showing the steps already taken.
Share only the sensitive information needed to support the request through an appropriate secure channel. Keep addressing current obligations while the application is considered. If the tax assessment itself is wrong, review correction or objection options separately. Ask your preparer to check the applicable relief window before spending time assembling records for an ineligible period.
