An eligible employed apprentice mechanic may qualify for a special tool deduction in addition to the ordinary tradesperson calculation. It is not an unlimited write-off of every tool or electronic device bought during the year.

Confirm apprentice and tool eligibility

CRA requires registration in an eligible apprenticeship program leading to a mechanic's designation and employment as an apprentice mechanic. Eligible tools must meet the specific conditions, including employer certification that you must provide them for the job.

The calculation uses the applicable year's rules and thresholds. CRA instructs eligible apprentices to calculate the tradesperson's tool deduction first and then determine the additional apprentice amount. A general-use phone or computer does not automatically qualify as an eligible tool.

Keep the purchase list detailed

For example, separate a diagnostic tool used for vehicle repair from a personal laptop purchased at the same time. The invoice total alone does not establish that every item qualifies. Record what each item does and why the employer requires it.

Prepare your tool package

  • Apprenticeship registration and employment details.
  • Itemized invoices, purchase dates, and proof of payment.
  • The employer-certified conditions of employment.
  • Reimbursements or allowances received for the tools.

Ask your preparer to check any unused tool amounts and whether an employee GST/HST rebate is relevant. Keep records of later tool sales as well as purchases. A reimbursement may have payroll consequences, so do not simply subtract it from the receipt total without checking how it was reported on your T4.
