Eligible adoption expenses are generally claimed in the year the adoption period ends, even when costs were paid over several years. That makes a complete running record more useful than collecting only the final year's receipts.

Separate eligible costs from the total family spending

CRA lists qualifying items such as licensed-agency fees, adoption-related legal and court costs, reasonable necessary travel, translation, and certain mandatory immigration expenses. Reimbursed amounts or assistance you are entitled to receive reduce the eligible claim. Annual limits and the definition of the adoption period must also be checked.

A large total bill is not the same as a large tax refund. The federal adoption claim is a tax credit, and provincial treatment and limits need to be considered separately.

Build the record throughout the process

For example, legal fees may be paid in one year and required travel in the next. Keep each receipt with the event it relates to. When the adoption is finalized, the preparer can identify which costs fall within the qualifying period and which amounts were reimbursed.

Keep an adoption-cost folder

  • The adoption order and documents establishing the relevant dates.
  • Agency, legal, court, translation, and travel invoices.
  • Proof of payment and currency conversion where relevant.
  • Employer, insurance, or other assistance received or expected.

If two adoptive parents share the claim, reconcile their expenses so the total does not exceed the permitted amount. Ask your preparer to check the limits for the year of claim rather than applying a figure from the year an early deposit was paid. Retain the supporting documents with that year's return.
